As Usual, Alberta Was Right
We were right.
Alberta was right.
It just took some time for Ottawa to accept it.
Think back, just a few months ago, as tensions flared between Canada and the United States over trade, Ottawa and some provinces responded with retaliation and political posturing.
In fact, Prime Minister Carney’s initial retaliation made things worse, triggering more tariffs on Canadian goods and putting thousands of potential jobs and opportunities for workers at risk.
We advocated for a different approach - measured diplomacy, strategic engagement, and practical negotiation.
We were, of course, called traitors for saying this.
But now, that strategy is showing its value.
In fact, Prime Minister Mark Carney just switched gears and adopted our approach himself.
Carney announced that Canada will remove all tariffs on US goods covered by the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA) by September 1st.
Predictably, Carney was praised for adopting the exact same position we were called traitors for.
But we won't hold a grudge, because our strategy wasn’t about scoring political points or chasing headlines.
It was about results.
The Alberta government took the same approach.
By sticking to principles, modelling smart trade practices, and refusing to let politics dictate economic policy, Alberta set the standard for the rest of Canada.
By engaging consistently with US partners, building strong relationships, and focusing on long-term solutions, our province demonstrated that retaliation is not the path to economic success.
The lesson is clear: smart, principled diplomacy wins.
Alberta’s strategy was a model for Canada to navigate trade challenges.
But make no mistake - Ottawa still stands in the way of Alberta’s full potential.
Federal restrictions - including production caps, net-zero energy regulations, tanker bans, and Bill C-69 - continue to block investment, stifle growth, and drain millions from our economy every day.
At the Free Alberta Strategy, we've consistently proven that practical, principled approaches work.
But, more importantly, we've consistently proven we can get the call right at the time - not just with hindsight!
The world is full of politicians who could have made the right decision with the benefit of hindsight.
Our job is to think ahead of the curve and try to force them to make the right decision the first time around!
The next battle is to force Ottawa to remove the barriers holding our province back and unlock the full potential of our natural resources.
If you make a donation today, it will help us continue to fight to remove these barriers.
We all know, eventually, they'll agree with us that they *should* have done that sooner.
But, with your help, we can actually get them to do it sooner!
Thank you for your support so far.
