Could an Alberta-Quebec Alliance work?

What do Alberta and Quebec have in common?

At first glance, not much.

Different languages, different cultures, different histories.

But Alberta and Quebec are united by something powerful: a shared desire to push back against federal overreach and reclaim provincial autonomy.

Recently, the Quebec government released a report outlining 42 recommendations aimed at increasing the province’s autonomy.

Notably, Quebec is looking to Alberta as a model - proposing to create a law similar to the Alberta Sovereignty Act to defend its jurisdiction and resist unconstitutional federal interference.

That’s right: the province that has historically defined itself in opposition to the rest of Canada is now looking westto Alberta - for leadership in defending provincial rights.

Some of Quebec’s other proposals include:

  • Creating a deliberation mechanism for invoking the Notwithstanding Clause, so that courts are discouraged from interfering.

  • Modifying Quebec’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms to reflect a provincial interpretation of rights, independent from the Canadian Charter.

  • Introducing Quebec Citizenship, reinforcing the province’s unique identity and sovereignty.

On March 21st, Premier Danielle Smith sent a letter to Quebec Premier François Legault.

In it, she expressed Alberta’s support for Quebec’s push to strengthen its provincial authority - and proposed something even bigger: a joint effort to rally other provinces and demand a meeting to discuss rebalancing Canada’s federal system.

The idea that Alberta and Quebec - provinces with such different histories and perspectives - are now aligning around the issue of provincial sovereignty should be a wake-up call for the rest of the country.

This is no longer a regional issue.

This is a national movement.

The Free Alberta Strategy has always recognized that the only path to real reform is through provincial strength and cooperation.

Now that other provinces are catching on, there's hope that we can work together to restore provincial autonomy.

The tide is turning.

Alberta and Quebec are leading the charge.

But this moment will only matter if we turn it into momentum.

If you believe in the idea that Alberta - not Ottawa - should make the decisions that affect our lives, now is the time to step up.

Your donation today will help us amplify this message, grow our movement, and push back against federal overreach.

Maybe, we'll even inspire some other provinces to do the same!

Thank you for standing with us,

Sincerely,

The Free Alberta Strategy Team
