Worse Than The National Energy Program

The federal government’s so-called “Emissions Reduction Plan” - including its oil and gas emissions cap - will devastate Alberta’s economy.

We knew it all along.

But thanks to a freedom of information request obtained by The Hub, we now have proof - from the Alberta government’s own commissioned research - showing just how bad it will be.

The Conference Board of Canada was hired in 2023 to assess the economic and fiscal impacts of Ottawa’s plan.

The final report, delivered to the province in January 2025, contains detailed modelling of Alberta’s economic future under these policies.

The government released the main report in March… but held back the detailed economic tables.

The Hub fought for access and, through a FOIP request, obtained part of that hidden data.

The numbers are staggering:

• $941.7 billion in lost economic activity between 2030 and 2050.

• Over 150,000 Alberta jobs gone by 2050.

• $3,291 less disposable income per Alberta household per year by 2050.

• More than $196 billion wiped from provincial revenues.

For perspective, the much-hated National Energy Program of the 1980s “only” cost Alberta $37 billion over four years.

Ottawa’s current plan will take $102 billion in just the first four years alone.

And this is only the partial data.

The complete numbers could be even worse.

Ottawa’s plan would gut Alberta’s energy industry, cripple our economy, and leave our provincial government without the revenues it needs to fund health care, education, or contributions to the Heritage Fund.

If Alberta doesn’t stand up and assert its constitutional sovereignty, this will happen.

Ottawa will destroy the foundation of our economy, and we’ll be left picking up the pieces - just like after the National Energy Program, but on an even bigger scale.

That’s why the Free Alberta Strategy is fighting to make sure no federal government can ever impose policies like this on Alberta without our consent.

1. The Alberta government should release all the Conference Board data so Albertans can see the full effects of the federal policy.

2. The federal government must scrap their disastrous emissions cap.

3. If Ottawa refuses, Alberta must take all constitutional steps necessary to protect our industries, our jobs, and our economic freedom.
